Finance minister on her way to becoming Sweden’s first female PM

Magdalena Andersson has been nominated as the next leader of the Social Democrats, putting her on course to become Sweden’s first female prime minister. Up until now, all Nordic countries, besides Sweden, have had at least two female prime ministers.

 

Tunisia appoints first female prime minister

Tunisia’s President has appointed the country’s first female prime minister. Najla Bouden Ramadhane, a professor at an engineering school, will be the first woman appointed as head of government in an Arab League nation.

 

11-year-old girl created ‘Her Way’ magazine to honour women’s sport

Abbie was looking through sporting magazines in a waiting room when she realised they hardly mentioned her female sporting heroes. With support from her parents, the 11-year-old wrote articles and created puzzles to create a digital magazine. “I noticed that there weren’t really any magazines about just women’s sport, so I really wanted to make one,” she said. The first issue launched, charging readers $2, with half of the money going to UNICEF Australia’s Empower Girls Through Cricket appeal.

 

Australia’s top football leagues have been jointly rebranded for inclusivity

Australia’s top women’s and men’s football leagues have been jointly rebranded as A-Leagues in a bid to make the game more inclusive. The A-League has been rebranded as A-League Men, while the W-League has been rebranded as A-League Women. Danny Townsend, Managing Director of the A-League, said “it’s not men’s football, or women’s football, it’s just football”.

 

Gladys Berejiklian resigns as NSW premier

In 2019, Gladys Berejiklian was praised by her colleagues as she became the first female to be elected premier in NSW. Today she resigned as NSW Premier, after the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) revealed it would investigate whether she had breached public trust. In addition, she is resigning as the Member for Willoughby and will leave parliament as soon as her position has been filled.
