NCAA apologises to female athletes
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball administrators have apologised to female basketball players after the differences between the men’s and women’s tournaments went viral on social media. Sedona Prince took to TikTok to show the differences between the facilities for male and female athletes including differently sized weight rooms, food and the amount of teams for each gender.
Nawal El Saadawi dies at age 89
After a lifetime spent fighting for women’s rights and equality, Egypt’s trailblazing writer Nawal El Saadawi passed away at the age of 89. Nawal authored more than 55 books and was the first to spotlight female genital mutilation with The Hidden Face of Eve in 1980. She made a great impact campaigning against women wearing the veil, polygamy and inequality in Islamic inheritance rights between men and women.
Tanzania’s first female president elected
Tanzania’s new President Samia Suluhu Hassan is the first female head of state in the east African country of 58 million. Wearing a hijab and holding a Quran, the 61-year-old took the oath of office at State House.
New astronaut Barbie released
Russia’s only female cosmonaut, Anna Kikina, has inspired Barbie’s two latest astronaut dolls: one in a blue training suit and one a white space suit. The astronaut Barbies were manufactured as part of an initiative to inspire girls and women and to mark the upcoming 60th anniversary of the first human space flight. Kikina said, “It is not necessary that every girl playing with such a Barbie wants to become an astronaut. The most important thing is that they all know that they have a choice, they have the right to choose any profession that they like.”
Cardi B becomes the first female rapper with a diamond-certified single
Cardi B has made hip hop history as the first ever female rapper to have a diamond-certified single. Her 2017 debut single ‘Bodak Yellow’ sold 10 million copies just in the U.S. She joins the likes of Eminem, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, The Black Eyed Peas, The Weeknd and Drake.
