How an international man of mystery inspired a 20 year career in finance

I was inspired to get into finance through my godfather. Growing up, he always lived overseas – Japan and the US, mainly. He came home to Australia, generally over summer, and always under much fanfare, with my mum and dad and their friends eager to find out what he had been up to during the year. Most people didn’t know what he did, but everyone knew he was in the financial services industry.

To me, as a young woman at school, he was always an international man of mystery; A person telling wonderful, endearing and enthusiastic stories of big deals, of places he had been to and people he had met. He always sounded like he had great time with lots of learning, navigating the changing market and with no day ever seeming the same. I was eager to find out for myself one day.

So when I decided to go to uni, I knew what I wanted to explore: it was financial services. Nearly 20 years later, I now know why he had a great time. I too have done much exploring across the globe, never having one day similar to the next.

So you may ask, where has my career in finance taken me?

Put simply: All around the world. Where have I been to … well all throughout Australia and New Zealand, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Monaco, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, Montreal, Toronto, Japan, Hong Kong. But the most memorable work / travel experience I have had in my working career was to Taiwan. I had the wonderful experience of pitching our global listed property investment capabilities for a large institutional mandate. And whilst we didn’t win the opportunity, I loved every single moment of it. It was entirely lost in translation and so very different to anything I have ever been involved in but such a personal learning and development experience. It was amazing.

A few years ago my career in finance even enabled me to interview the Premier of NSW, Gladys Berejiklian, on behalf of Women in Super. Now, that was a thrilling opportunity, one that pushed me outside my boundaries and I grew personally from the experience.

So what can I say about fostering a career in finance? I love it and I implore any young women to seek out a career in finance. You can search for experiences such as these and you too might become a person of international mystery.
