1. Tax On Feminine Hygiene Products abolished in the UK
Britain has become the latest country to abolish the “tampon tax,” eliminating the taxes previously placed on female sanitary products. This sexist tax that classed sanitary products as ‘nonessential’, ‘luxury items’ can now be consigned to the history books as the UK joins Australia, Canada and India.
2. WA’s first female maths professor lands top award in Australia Day honours list
As a teenager, Cheryl Praeger was told “girls don’t pass math”, before she went on to become Western Australia’s first female mathematics professor. She has now been appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia, the highest honour in the Australia Day awards and urges all women to grasp opportunities, even after they’re discouraged.
3. Puerto Rico has declared a state of emergency for violence against women
One woman is killed every seven days in Puerto Rico, deeming Latin America and the Caribbean amongst the most dangerous regions for women. Puerto Rico’s long issue of violence against women has called for a state of emergency declaration, alongside new measures such as a mobile app for victims to request help and report attacks and a program to monitor women who have taken out restraining orders against abusers.
4. UK Sport names 27 female coaches to increase female representation
In an effort to diversify UK Sport, the new female coaches’ leadership programme has 27 coaches from 15 sports coming together in an effort to more than double the representation in the Olympic and Paralympic high-performance community by 2024. They’re aiming to increase role models so that more females can step up the ladder and to see an increase in female coaches at the top level.
5. Woman believes TikTok followers saved her life
27-year-old Canadian, Jade Jules, created a video on TikTok, asking fellow users what the “1F” that she’d discovered written on the top of her garbage bin meant. Many users alerted her that she may be being watched, believing that the “1F” could indicate “one female” living in the home, advising her to call the authorities. Jade called the police and has since installed surveillance equipment at her residence.
